Ghost ants are small. Workers sized at about 1/16 ".
Their heads are dark, but their abdomen, legs and antennea are pale and semi-transparent, giving them the name Ghost Ants (also known as black-headed ants).
Ghost Ants live in colonies with several queens in each colony. They usually form nests outdoors, often near trees, where they later feed on honeydew produced by tree insects. However, they may enter homes in search of food and shelter from harsh weather, where their passion for honeydew turns into a passion for sweets. They sometimes set up nests in potted plants, which resemble their natural habitat.
Ghost Ants can be found all across the U.S. and Canada with recent infestations reported all over the country. They are common pests in Hawaii and Florida.
Pest Control Tips for dealing with Ghost ants -
As with other types of ants, the best way to deal with an infestation of Ghost Ants is using slow-acting ant bait. The foraging workers then take the bait and carry it into the nests where queens and other colony members feed on it as well.
Directly spraying or dusting nests with pesticide can be counter-productive and actually cause the ants to spread to more nesting sites.
