Snout Beetles

Weevils are commonly known as  Snout Beetles. Snout Beetles are drawn to food in the pantry. They have an elongated snout so they can dig into the food they survive on.  There are over 35,000 species of weevils.
Snout Beetles have either a oval or a pear-shaped body with an elongated head that forms a snout. They are generally brownish black in coloring, although tropical snout beetles do come in brighter colors

They use their snout to dig through food, and the females use their snout to dig a tunnel where she lays her eggs. The female will bore the hole and inside will place one egg. In her breeding time, a female may lay up to three hundred eggs.  In three days, the egg will hatch and a larvae without legs will start to work, eating up the plant life the larvae was hatched in. .
Snout Beetles (or Weevils) are true pests not only to homeowners, but also to farmers and anyone who stores food for long periods of time. . Many people can relate to opening up a box of cornmeal and finding the corn meal alive with wiggling masses of snout beetle larvae.Snout Beetles feed on any hard vegetable matter, organic waste, seeds and wood.  The snout beetle will go after grains and nuts.

Although it is hard to deal with the fact that your cornmeal box is full of snout beetles, these beetles play a large part in keeping the ecosystem healthy. If you notice weevils in your pantry in food stuff, simply take the box outside away from houses to a wooded area and sprinkle the cornmeal on the ground. There is no reason to destroy the snout beetle, it is not one of the species that can wreck economical havoc on the world by destroying crops. The snout beetle only eats dead and decaying matter.
