Bug Zappers

A form of electronic pest control, bug zappers are readily found in hardware stores, plant nurseries and home improvement centers nationwide.
.
Bug Zappers are appropriately named because voltage of at least 2,000 V. is supplied by a transformer. There are wire grids suspended on the unit that will electrocute any bug that comes between the elements. The lure, is a bright light that penetrates the darkness. The light attracts insects luring them to their death.

The problem with electric bug zappers is they kill the beneficial insects such as moths. Moths have poor eyesight, and they navigate at night by the light of the moon. When a bright light appears in their path, they head straight for it, probably believing it is the moon. Then one "zzzzz" and the insect is gone.

It has been estimated that one bug zapper can kill 10,000 insects in one evening's time. But not the insects most humans find annoying, like mosquitos or tiny gnats. Instead, the zapper reaches out to the aquatic insects like moths and beetles which are beneficial to the ecosystem.

Your best bet if you want to get rid of mosquitos and flying biting bugs is to look into the carbon monoxide-based bug killers. There are several out on the market today that are effective in destroying the bugs that bite.
