Norway Rats

Although bearing the name of Norway Rats these rodents were first indigenous to China. Due to tradeships and imports and exports these rodents have now found their way to all corners of the world except for Antartica.


Norway Rats are carriers of many diseases including the Bubonic Plague, trichia, and Typhus. The saliva of the Norway Rat is loaded with bacteria.

The Norway Rats are considered a threat to public health because of the amount of infection they are capable of spreading. The Norway Rat is a large, chunky rat with short tail.

Their prime habitat is dense vegetation that can offer them sufficient cover from predators. They are often found in garbage dumps, chicken coops and dank basements. They eat both plant and animal life, and are known to kill young chicks, lambs and even piglets.
 
The breed quickly, bearing up to 14 young. Although they only live for a few years, in that time frame they can do a lot of damage. If you suspect that your have Norway rats, you should call a professional exterminator and keep pets and small children out of the area until the rats are gone.

Once they have been eradicated, it would be wise to screen off all openings into your building, and get tight fitting lids for your garbage cans.
